![]() This setting could prevent some other voice services that use hot words or wake-up commands from working. If the screen is on or the device is charging, you can say "Hey Google" from any screen. Learn how to change your Google app settings. Not all settings are available for all languages. Another solution is KDE's Plasma BigScreen, but this is still in beta and even simple things like watching Netflix on a native Netflix client won't work.Settings can vary by device and Google app version. Also, at that point, you're being tracked by google anyway. It works, but with issues like only being able to play videos up to 1080p and some lag. As I write this, the most common streaming solution via raspberry p is installing AndroidTV. To do so would cost 2-3x more than buying the chromecast, would require extensive setup, and performance was lacking. I also looked into buying a raspberry pi as an open-source media streaming solution. If anything, Amazon felt worse in some ways in terms of privacy. The Apple ones wouldn't work since I don't own any apple products nor do I want to own any. The competing proprietary products (FireStick, Roku, Tivo, etc ) were not much better in privacy. The only location info they'll get is where I live since I'm not walking around with the chromecast - and there are already a hundred other ways for Google to know where I live.īefore I settled on this, I did look into getting another smart tv device. The new chromecast I think will be very similar to Amazon's Firestick 4k, but it will run a purer version of android instead of FireOS, so I'm expecting more app compatibility, less bloat, and less feelings that the device is constantly trying to sell me something since that's basically what Amazon products are designed to do. I'm planning on purchasing this since even if casting from my phone should fail on calyxos, I'll still have other means to watch stuff. Since I made this post, Google announced a new "Chromecast with Google TV." This device still allows casting, but also has an androidtv like OS with a remote.
